The Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM) is an institutional cooperation of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz and the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research GmbH in Darmstadt. It links the academic world of a university with the scientific possibilities of an internationally renowned unique large-scale accelerator center for ions. In the coming years the new international accelerator facility FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the largest research projects worldwide, will be built in Darmstadt.

The HIM research section Electromagnetic Processes invites outstanding candidates to apply for a

PhD student (all genders) position in experimental hadron physics

Reference number: 25.78-4311

part-time 65%

The position is embedded in the project PRIMA on the measurement of the Pion transition form factor in doubly virtual Primakoff-Kinematics. The experimental setup uses the backward endcap of the PANDA electromagnetic calorimeter. The calorimeter is installed at the three-spectrometer facility A1 of the electron accelerator MAMI in Mainz. The measurement yields an important input for the calculation of theoretical corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g-2).

Your Responsibilities:

  • develop a detailed understanding of the experimental setup by running simulations
  • participate in the experiment data taking campaigns of the PRIMA experiment at the MAMI accelerator
  • set up an analysis software framework
  • work on the analysis of the experimental data
  • contribute to the supervision of Bachelor and Master students.

Your profile:

  • a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in experimental nuclear physics
  • and good communication skills in English (both verbal and written).
  • Experience in the field of nuclear, hadron or particle physics
  • knowledge in software development for data acquisition, experiment control, and data analysis are desirable.

We offer:

the duration of the position is limited to an initial term of 36 months.

The salary is based on the German civil service employees (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst - TVöD (Bund)).

GSI and HIM supports the professional development of women. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply for the position.

Severely disabled persons are given preference when equally qualified.

For more information about FAIR and GSI is available at www.gsi.de and www.fair-center.eu .

Inquiries concerning the position can be sent to Prof. Dr. Frank Maas ( f.maas@gsi.de (mailto:f.maas@gsi.de) ).
